Exclusive – first ever survey of herbal medicine prices.

Proline Botanicals has carried out what is believed to be the first price survey of commercially-manufactured herbal medicines in the United Kingdom.

The survey examined data from six herbal medicine manufacturers (Proline, MediHerb, Rutland Biodynamics, Herbal Apothecary, Phyto Pharmaceuticals and Avicenna) and calculated the cost of herbs contained within each product.

The findings varied widely – some herbal medicines contained herbs priced in excess of 200% of the herbs in comparable medicines.

Commenting on the survey Proline Managing Director Tony Carter said:

“We wanted to do this survey as we wanted to get an idea of where Proline products were positioned in the market. It is an incredibly tedious job to go through all the price lists and calculate the cost of the raw herbs, but the final result has been worth the effort. Once we had finished the project we thought we would put the data in the public domain so that herbalists everywhere can see where their money is going.

“I have to say that I was very surprised at some of the findings. At Proline we have a very high standard of selection and purchase of herbs, and will often pay a premium to get the best herbs. Therefore I was staggered to find other companies charging such over the top prices.

“I happen to care about herbal medicine and want effective treatments sold at affordable prices. In the long run we all benefit if more people try herbal medicine and find that it works for them. That will only come about when manufacturers offer therapeutically-valid products, operate independently-audited processing standards, and charge a fair price for herbal ingredients.”
